Master Jira Workflow Reporting with Time In Status

Get Better Insights Into Your Jira Workflows

Understanding how work items progress through your Jira workflows helps you identify bottlenecks, monitor team performance, and improve delivery efficiency.

Time in Status provides a comprehensive set of reports to analyze how long work items spend in each status, how work is distributed among assignees, and how transitions affect workflow progress.

Explore the Available Report Types

Time in Status offers three categories of reports, each providing a different perspective on your Jira workflows.

1. Status Reports: Track Time and Workflow Progress

Status Reports help you understand how work items move through your workflow and how much time they spend in each status.

Available reports include:

  • Time in Status: Shows the total time each work item spent in every status.
  • Average Time: Displays the average duration work items remain in a status.
  • Time in Status per Date: Tracks the time work items spend in each status across different dates.
  • Status Count: Shows how many times work items entered each status.
  • Status Entrance Date: Identifies when a work item entered a specific status.
  • Status Change Duration: Measures the time taken to transition from one status to another.
  • Time in Status per Time Grain: Groups time-in-status data by week to help analyze changes over time.
  • Average Time in Status per Time Grain: Shows the average duration spent in each status across weekly periods.

Use these reports to identify statuses where work accumulates, investigate delays, and understand how efficiently work items move through your process.

2. Assignee Reports: Understand Workload Distribution

Assignee Reports help you analyze how work is distributed across team members and how long work items remain assigned to each person.

Available reports include:

  • Assignee Time: Shows the total time work items remained assigned to each user.
  • Time With Assignee per Time Grain: Groups time spent with each assignee by week.
  • Assignee Count: Shows how many times work items were reassigned between team members.
  • Average Time With Assignee: Displays the average time work items remained assigned to each user.
  • Average Time With Assignee per Time Grain: Tracks average assignment duration across weekly periods.

These reports help you understand assignment patterns, identify frequent handoffs, and evaluate how work is distributed across your team.

3. Transition Reports: Examine Workflow Changes

Transition Reports provide detailed insights into changes in status and assignment history. They help you understand when transitions occur, how frequently work items change states, and how work moves between team members.

Available reports include:

  • Transition Count: Shows how many times work items transitioned between statuses.
  • Transition Date: Records when a transition occurred.
  • Transition Details: Provides a detailed history of transitions for each work item.
  • Status Change Duration: Measures the time taken between specific status changes.
  • First Transition to Assignee: Identifies when a work item was first assigned to a specific user.
  • First Transition From Assignee: Records when a work item was first reassigned away from a specific user.
  • Last Transition to Assignee: Shows the most recent time a work item was assigned to a user.
  • Last Transition From Assignee: Records the most recent time a work item was removed from an assignee.
  • First Transition to Status: Identifies the first time a work item entered a status.
  • First Transition From Status: Records the first time a work item left a status.
  • Last Transition to Status: Shows the most recent time a work item entered a status.
  • Last Transition From Status: Records the most recent time a work item left a status.

Use these reports to investigate workflow history, review reassignment patterns, measure transition durations, and better understand how work progresses through your Jira processes.

Choose Between Table View and Chart View

Time in Status reports are available in two display formats: Table View and Chart View. Each format helps you explore the same reporting data from a different perspective.

Table View: Detailed Data for In-Depth Analysis

Table View presents report results in rows and columns, making it easier to examine individual work items and compare exact values.

Use Table View when you need to:

  • Review precise time values for individual work items.
  • Investigate status durations and assignment history.
  • Examine detailed workflow transitions.
  • Export data to CSV for further analysis, reporting, or auditing.

Table View is particularly useful for Jira administrators, project managers, analysts, and QA teams who need detailed information to investigate specific cases or evaluate workflow performance.

Chart View: Visualize Trends and Patterns

Chart View transforms report data into visual representations, helping you recognize patterns and communicate findings more effectively.

Depending on the selected report, available visualizations can include bar charts, pie charts, and trend lines.

Use Chart View to:

  • Identify potential workflow bottlenecks.
  • Compare time spent across statuses or assignees.
  • Monitor trends over time.
  • Present findings during sprint reviews, retrospectives, and management meetings.

Chart View is ideal for team leads, project managers, and stakeholders who need a clear overview of workflow performance without reviewing every data row.

Which View Should You Use?

Choose Table View when you need precise values, detailed investigation, or structured data for export. Choose Chart View when you want to identify trends, compare results visually, or communicate key findings to stakeholders.

Pro tip: Combine both views for a more complete analysis. Start with Chart View to identify unusual patterns or potential bottlenecks, then switch to Table View to examine the underlying work items and investigate the details.
